The Forest of the Three Borders
Wald- und Grundbesitz GmbH purchased the wooded area covering about 1,830 hectares of the total former military training ground Lieberose (size 26,730 ha) as LOT 1 on 25 August 2005 from Brandenburgische Bodengesellschaft (Brandenburg Ground Society) of the Land Brandenburg as Forest "Drei Grenzen" (Three Borders).
This forestry was given the name Three Borders because three administrative districts, district Dahme-Spreewald, district Oberspreewald-Lausitz and the Spree-Neiße district converge in a network of trails here. In addition, the historic forest owners von Houwald, von der Schulenburg and the Royal Prussian Tower also met here.
The Forest of the Three Borders – a consolidated woodland property of approx.. 1,830 ha, about 110 km southeast of Berlin, is situated in the administrative district Dahme-Spreewald and the Spree-Neiße district in the heath and lake region of eastern Brandenburg. The woodland region Forest Three Borders is situated on the eastern side of the former military training ground in the local sub-districts Byhleguhre, Byhlen, Fehrow and Schmogow.
In its entirety, Forest Three Borders is a sanctuary for heath and forest ecosystems on nutrient-poor sands and inland dunes. The forestry operation is mainly characterised by Mark Brandenburg lichen-pine forests, on better locations by durmast oak-pine forest. The forestry operation is located in the growing area of "Mittelbrandenburgischer Talsand- und Moraenenland" which was formed by the Weichsel glaciations. The growth district border cuts through the forestry operation in the southern region, and thus the northern region is separated from the southern outskirts with the valley sands of the Oberspree wooded lowlands – glacial valley of the Weichsel glaciations – by the melted snow and ice water deposits in the growing area of the "Beeskow Plateau". Part of the forestry operation is situated in the nature conversation are "Lieberose Endmoräne", some of it is a sandy landscape in the upper moraine region which has remained very nutrient-poor.
The conditions of the location range from dry continental lowland climate to moderately dry continental lowland climate. The average annual temperature is 8.6 °C and the total annual rainfall lies between 470-540 mm with below average water and nutrient being provided. Here we find a climate strongly characterised by the continent with hot and cold spikes of 35 °C in summer and to -30 °C in winter.
