What are wood-based panels?

Wood-based panel is a general term for a variety of different engineered panel products that contain a significant amount of wood in the form of strips, veneers, chips, strands or fibres. Kronospan manufactures the following wood-based materials:

• Particleboards

• Medium Density Fibrеboard ( MDF)

• Oriented Strand Board (OSB)

• High density fiberboard (HDF)

• Laminated Flooring

Which wood-based products does Kronospan offers?

Kronospan has achieved excellence in the production of particleboards (PB), medium density fibreboards (MDF), OSB, plywood, finger-joint panels and flooring. In addition, Kronospan is producing other associated value-added products, such as melamine-faced panels, worktops, wall panels, lacquered HDF, compact boards; high pressure laminates (HPL) and others.

What is the difference between Particleboard (PB) and Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF)?

Medium density fiberboard and Particleboard are both pressed wood-based materials often used in the furniture and interior design industries. The two products share similarities in terms of application, density, strength and durability.

The MDF is made from fine wood fibers, it has has a smooth surface and is easier to mill than PB. It works well for projects that utilize complicated and elaborate shapes and may be finished with veneer or laminate. The PB is less expensive than MDF and is made by hot-pressing smaller wood particles with resin adhesives. It’s a fairly easy material to work with in terms of cutting and milling, and can be used with all standard woodworking machines. It is primarily used as core material for doors, furniture, and cabinets, and is often covered on one or both sides with veneer or another surface finish.

What does “texture” mean?

Texture is the way a product’s surface feels and appears and makes an important part of the decor’s aesthetic look. Learn more about the different textures on our products at: http://kronospan-express.com/en_US/all_textures

What is melamine?

Melamine is a synthetic resin employed in the production of plywood and particleboard adhesives, laminated countertops and tabletops. The melamine process starts with raw core material either PB or MDF, which is then covered with a decorative paper impregnated with melamine resin. As a result, the melamine boards offer a wide range of decors and are known to be a main interior solution.

What is impregnation?

In our business impregnation means the saturation of different kinds of papers with urea resin, a melamine resin or a combination of both. The resins may contain additional additives to improve the properties of the melamine film during and after the pressing process. After the paper is saturated with resin it gets dried in an oven for better handling. Next is the melamine face coating of particleboards or MDF/HDF board under high pressure and temperature.

What is the difference between NCS (Natural Color System), RAL color standard and Pantone Matching System (PMS)?

The main difference in the color systems comes from their usage. For example, NCS is primary used for decor designs, RAL for varnish and powder coating and Pantone in printing. As a result, the work of many manufacturers in different locations is facilitated because they can all refer to a specific color chart and make sure that colors are matching without having a direct contact with one another.

What are the storage conditions for Kronospan products?

The wood-based panels need to be stored in a dry and open space, where the air humidity levels are fully optimized to about 40-65% and the air temperature is 20°C. The wood-based products must always be protected against direct contact with water and not subject to high variations in temperature and humidity. Each PB, MF PB, MDF or OSB package is individually wrapped. Always store the boards on a stable and horizontal platform and on sufficient height or support to avoid direct contact with water of vegetation (minimum 10 cm above the ground).
